Breath First: A Five-Minute Morning Practice

Quiet morning ritual

Every class at Amberleaf opens the same way: five minutes of breathing before a single pose. Students always ask whether they can steal that feeling for home. This is the short answer — a practice that fits between the alarm and the kettle.

Minute one: arrive

Sit on the edge of your bed or a chair, feet flat, hands on thighs. Don't try to relax yet. Just notice: the weight of your body, the temperature of the air, the first three sounds you can hear. Naming the morning tells your nervous system the day has begun on your terms.

Minutes two to four: slow the exhale

Breathe in through the nose for a count of four, out through the nose for a count of six. The longer exhale is the whole trick — it directly slows the heart. If counting feels fussy, simply make each out-breath audibly longer than the in-breath. Ten rounds is plenty.

Minute five: set one intention

Ask yourself what today actually needs. Not the to-do list — the quality. Patience for the commute? Steadiness for a hard conversation? Say it silently once, then stand up and begin. Five minutes, no mat, no app, no special trousers required.

If you'd like guidance in person, our Meditation class runs Tuesday to Sunday at 8:30 am, and your first session is always free for members' guests.
